Gemdarr

A legally recognised will, made online

Making a will still means solicitors, paperwork and cost. CodeLeap designed and built a secure platform that lets people create, manage and execute a legally recognised will entirely online, guided step by step from first draft to witnessed signature.

What we did CodeLeap designed and built the platform with a guided questionnaire that turns legal requirements into plain questions, a DocuSign-integrated signing and witnessing flow, executor access controls and the administrative backend behind it.

Gemdarr — Web platform case study Gemdarr

Writing a will means booking a solicitor, filling in unfamiliar paperwork and paying for advice you only half understand, which is why it gets postponed for years. Gemdarr, a UK startup, wanted to make it far simpler: a service where anyone can produce a valid, legally recognised will from home, at their own pace. CodeLeap designed and built the platform that does it, from the first draft through to a witnessed signature.

Product features

  • Guided will questionnaire

A step-by-step questionnaire turns legal requirements into plain questions anyone can answer. People build their will at their own pace, save it as a draft and preview the finished document before committing to anything.

  • DocuSign signing and witnessing

Each finished will is executed through a DocuSign flow the platform orchestrates end to end, inviting witnesses and tracking every signature from requested through confirmed to signed. The will only completes once everyone has signed, so the platform enforces the formality rather than trusting the user to manage it.

  • Executor access and letters

Users can write personal letters to leave alongside their will, and nominated executors request access when the time comes. The access request is a controlled step rather than an open door, which matters for a document that only becomes relevant in difficult circumstances.

  • Admin panel

A back-office panel lets the team manage wills, users, letters and executor access requests in one place. It is the operational layer that makes the service runnable by a small team.

Challenge

A will is only useful if it is valid, and validity depends on formalities that most people do not know: who may witness, in what order signatures happen, and what makes a document enforceable. The product had to carry all of that without asking the user to understand any of it. Trust was the second constraint. People are being asked to record their final wishes on a website instead of in a solicitor's office, which means the experience has to feel careful and serious at every step, and the execution has to be demonstrably correct rather than merely plausible.

Solution

CodeLeap designed and built the platform around a guided questionnaire that translates legal requirements into ordinary questions, with drafts saved and the finished document previewed before commitment. Execution runs through a DocuSign flow the platform drives itself, inviting witnesses and tracking each signature's status so a will completes only when every signature is in place. Around that sit executor access controls, personal letters left alongside the will, and the admin panel the team runs the service from. Turning a solicitor's appointment into a guided online process strips out the cost and friction that stop people acting, while keeping the formality that makes the document hold.
